8 Tips to Get Your Home Ready for Spring
1. Replace Filters
During the colder months, dust can accumulate in the airways, causing or inflaming allergies. For that reason it’s a good idea to change out air filters seasonally to maintain good air quality in your home.
2. Inspect Windows
Snow and ice have the potential to be very damaging to your home’s infrastructure. Once everything begins to melt, water damage and minor leaks will help you determine if there’s been damage and where repairs are needed.
3. Examine Roof for damage during winter months
It’s a good idea to inspect your roof for durability after the cold weather begins to fade to help prevent minor issues from turning into major, expensive issues. Broken or dislodged shingles, ice dams, and leaks are important things to look out for as you inspect your roof for damage.
4. Check the gutters for erosion.
As the snow and ice melt, your gutter is your roof’s best friend in routing excess moisture away from the house. But your gutters only work if they’re intact, so it’s a good idea to make sure there isn’t damage to your gutter system that’s preventing water from flowing down.
5. Inspect concrete
Concrete foundations can settle or – worse – crack during the changing temperatures. During the spring sweep of your home, check to make sure that any concrete has maintained its structural integrity to prevent sometimes irreparable damage from occurring.
6. Trim overgrowth
Trees, shrubs, and plants take up less space when they’re bare for the winter, but can quickly grow out of control during warmer months. The beginning of spring is a good time to assess whether your yard’s greenery needs trimming.
7. Check deck and porch siding
The wintry elements are harsh to the exterior materials of your home – including and especially wood. Check your deck and porch for water damage and rot.
8. Sprinklers
Spring is the time to turn your in-ground sprinkler system on again! Once you’re sure the frost is over (and your pipes won’t freeze) you can start watering your lawn and garden.
Spring is around the corner, and with this helpful list, you’ll easily be able to get your home prepared in time for the warmer weather.
